What Happens When Your Roof Leaks?

When you notice a leak in your home usually it’s already passed several layers of protection that are set up in the home. The first layer of protection in a home is the roof itself or at least the asphalt shingles on the home. The asphalt shingles on the home may become damaged and let water pass through. When this occurs the water will travel on top of the tar paper that is installed under the asphalt shingles. While the tar paper is water proof it doesn’t really offer a full level of water protection and allows water to seep through nail holes that are in the tar paper where shingles were attached. Sometimes the tar paper will allow the water to seep down the roof and out the edge of the roof without damaging any other area of the roof.

Once water has made it past the layer of asphalt shingles and tar paper the next obstacle in it’s way is the roof decking. The roof decking is usually made from wood that is sheeting and placed underneath the asphalt shingles. Water that accumulates on the roof decking will saturate it and likely cause it to rot if the leak remains long enough. Nail holes and cracks in the sheeting will allow water to travel further down the roof and start dripping into the attic. Once it’s reached this far it’s already started to cause moisture buildup in the attic and without proper ventilation in the attic you can start seeing mold growth in just a few days.

Water that has started leaking from the roof decking into the attic can start to really damage the home. If your attic isn’t finished with flooring and walls then chances are the water will drip down onto the insulation in the attic. Saturating and compressing the insulation will make it much less energy efficient causing your energy bills to go up. After the layer of insulation the next layer of material is drywall. This drywall can be damaged the very first time it gets wet. If your homes roof is leaking and water has made it to your ceiling this is likely the point at which a home owner will notice. By now however, the water has already caused damage to other areas of the roof including the attic insulation. If left unrepaired the water can actually go further down damaging walls and floors on the way. Getting a roof repaired before it gets this bad is something that you should try to do.
